On March 1, 1922, the
Lewisburg Rotary Club received its charter. The
officers were President, J. Floyd Murrey; Vice
President, Edward T. Price; Secretary, Leslie Marshall;
Treasurer, Marvin Clayton; Sergeant-at-Arms, Jim McCord.
The Club has always been actively engaged in community
affairs. In its first year, the Club organized the
Marshall County Chamber of Commerce. It soon completed
three other major projects: the removal of toll gates,
the establishment of a consolidated high school, and the
securing of a pure water supply for the area.
The Club sponsored the Gallatin Rotary Club in 1923 and
co-sponsored the Lawrenceburg Club in 1947. Through the
years, the Club assisted many groups and individuals,
such as Boy Scouts, Little League, the Marshall County
library, Boys’ State, Red Cross, U.S.O., 4-H clubs,
Crippled Children’s Hospital, and Boys Town near
Jackson. The Club sponsored Boy Scout Troop 307 in the
early 1950’s and an Interact Club at Marshall County
High School during the 1990’s.
Two members have served as District Governor. R. L.
McBride served in 1943-44 and Murray E. Hill in 1973-74.
In March 1972, the Club celebrated its 50th anniversary
with the charter president, Floyd Murrey, again serving
in that office, a Rotary International record at the
time. Roy D. Hickman, President of Rotary International,
was the featured speaker for the occasion. In 1997, Club
President Edmund Roberts emceed the Club’s 75th
anniversary celebration. Chris Clark from News Channel 5
in Nashville, and a fellow Rotarian, was the guest
speaker. President Roberts recognized three new Paul
Harris Fellows during this meeting, one of whom was the
Club’s first female member to be so honored.
The Lewisburg Rotary Club has always been dedicated to
improving the quality of life for the community. It was
one of the first organizations to initiate the building
fund for the county library. The Club paid its $10,000
pledge over a 10-year period, paying $1000 annually. In
1984, the Club built the first picnic shelter at the
local Recreation Center; and in 1999, it built another
shelter on one of the soccer fields. The Club’s latest
building project was a $20,000 donation to furnish a
classroom at the Lewisburg site of Columbia State
Community College. Recently, the Club has voted to
support Columbia State with a $5,000 pledge over the
next 5 years.
Since 1995, the Club has organized and overseen the
annual Lewisburg Christmas parade, an event all ages in
the community anxiously anticipate.
The majority of the Club’s fundraising efforts provides
money for college tuition as well as vocational
training. Currently, the Club awards over $6000.00
annually in scholarships.
